Description

This is an original 1937 model Western Electric 302. Collectors know that this model was the first version of the iconic classic, and was out for a single year. The 1937 model was different from the later versions, including having vents in the finger grip (for the ringer), smaller plungers, a different version of the induction coil, upside down relative to the later ones. This particular set has a marked #4 dial (with the W contact in the position that would later appear on the #5, suggesting a later repair). The dial has a celluloid number plate, itself a collector's item. The handset cord is clearly a later addition, as it is a coiled cloth cord (also itself a collector's item). The receiver element, handset, and transmitter element is marked '37. The base plate is marked '37, too. The handset is in almost mint condition - the bakelite is remarkably shiny. The only blemish in the handset is a small scrape/gouge in the receiver cap as shown. The ringer is marked '47 so it's a later addition to this set. The phone appears to have been repainted at one point. Paint condition is VG. Regardless of these imperfections, there are very few of these sets still in existence, so if you need this for your collection here is a chance.
